Instrumental

There are several instrumental groups at Dame Allan’s Schools:

Jazz Band takes place weekly for intermediate players (Grade 3 and up). It is perfect for brass players, saxophonists, guitarists and drummers.

 

String Sinfonietta takes place weekly, playing a variety of classical and pop arrangements. We encourage all string players to get involved.

 

Percussion Group takes place weekly and is perfect for anyone interested in drumming, samba and getting experience in playing in a group.

 

Concert Band takes place weekly. It is perfect for brass and woodwind players who get to tackle a variety of popular tunes, film classics and concert band standards.

 

Symphony Orchestra takes place weekly for intermediate players (Grade 3 and up). Pupils play a variety of classical and film music.

 

Ceilidh Band takes place weekly for Senior School Pupils. It is perfect for fiddles, recorders, flutes and many others.  Prepare for the annual Ceilidh with pipes and reels from all over!

 

Guitar Group takes place weekly. We strongly encourage all guitarists to join this group so that they can learn new songs and put together bands!

Northumbrian Pipes runs weekly and is open to pupils in Years 7-13 who want to learn how to play the pipes.

 

Junior Brass Ensemble takes place weekly for pupils in Years 3- 6. We strongly encourage all players of the trumpet, trombone, tenor horn, clarinet,saxophone, oboe or the bassoon to join.

 

Junior String/Woodwind takes place weekly for pupils in Years 1-6. We encourage all string and woodwind players to get involved.

 

Junior Ceilidh Band takes place weekly for pupils in Years 3-6. It is perfect for fiddles, recorders, flutes and many others.

 

Ukulele Club takes place weekly for pupils in Years 5-6.

 

Handbells Club takes place weekly for pupils in Years 4-6

 

Music Theory runs weekly for pupils in Years 3-6 and offers them the opportunity to learn about the fundamental elements that construct and govern the language of music.

 

Music Club runs weekly for pupils in Reception. It is a great introduction to the world of music for budding musicians.

 

These practices prepare pupils for the wide array of performance opportunities available to them. Jazz nights in the Newsom Hall, Termly Concerts at St James’ and St Basil’s Church and Newcastle Cathedral, fortnightly Live for Five recitals in the Lumsden Hall, performing arts productions, music competitions, performances for the local community, pupils are even asked to perform at various school events such as prize giving events or open mornings.

 

There are many significant benefits to studying, performing and creating music including:

  • accelerated cognitive development and improved metacognition
  • improved personal mental health, including reduced levels of stress and anxiety
  • fostering of teamwork, creative and social skills
  • developing self-discipline, time management and critical thinking ability.
