Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) was in the spotlight at Dame Allan’s Schools in Newcastle this A Level results day, as successful students looked to a future career in STEM.
Joseph Batey, Erin Corr, Annabel Forrester, Anya Holdsworth and Haylie Phillips, all 18-years-old, gathered to celebrate their results at the Fenham-based independent school this week (17th August), before heading across the UK to start their next chapters at university.
Joseph, from Hexham, achieved four A* grades in Physics, Maths, Further Maths and Chemistry. He has accepted a place at the prestigious University of Warwick to study Maths. He said: “I’m excited to start my course, I’ve always been interested in problem-solving and think Maths will hold me in good stead for my future career. I’ve really enjoyed my time at Dame Allan’s – I’ve been involved in a lot of co-curricular activities, so it’s been a highlight getting to meet lots of different people throughout the years. I’d definitely tell any future students to get stuck in and try out as many activities as possible!”
Anya Holdsworth, from Ponteland, achieved A*s in Biology and Chemistry, plus an A in Maths and an additional A* in EQP – a project worth half of an A Level. She is heading to the University of Sheffield to study Chemistry, with an industrial placement year. Speaking about her success, Anya said: “I’m absolutely delighted with my results today! Dame Allan’s has been fantastic in supporting all sides of me, encouraging my passion for music alongside my academic interest in science. Even though I took three challenging STEM subjects at A Level, I was never made to feel like I should be prioritising that over my musical interests, everyone was so supportive.”
Additionally, Erin, from Fenham, is heading to the University of Liverpool to study Medicinal Chemistry with Pharmacology. Annabel, from Gosforth, will be attending Durham University to study Biological Sciences and Haylie, from Hexham, hopes to pursue further study in Environmental Geoscience.
Will Scott, Principal at Dame Allan’s Schools, commented: “We’re passionate about STEM education at Dame Allan’s – our new Jubilee Building features several state-of-the-art laboratories – so it is very encouraging to see our A Level students choosing to pursue a career within STEM. I wish them all the very best for their futures at university and beyond.”
