Former Dame Allan’s School pupil Emma Tyndall has returned to Dame Allan’s Senior School to begin her post as History Teacher, relocating back to Newcastle to take on this new challenge seventeen years after she left the Schools.

In a strange twist of fate, Emma will be following in the footsteps of one of her own teachers, recently retired Head of History, Jacquetta Devine. Jacquetta, who fondly remembers teaching Emma at the Senior School,  even once joked that Emma would be a history teacher in the future!

Speaking about her new role at the Newcastle-based independent school, Emma said:

“Mrs Devine (I still can’t call her Jacquetta!) was an amazing teacher, tutor and support during my time at Dame Allan’s. She was my Sixth Form tutor and gave gentle nudges, guidance and support whenever required.

“She joked with me that I would become a history teacher when I was at school and despite my every effort, she was right! I’m not sure she would quite have anticipated me replacing her when she retired but life has a funny way of going full circle. I remember her rip-roaring laugh, her eclectic dress-sense (always super cool!) and her unending kindness. I hope I do her proud this year, and beyond.”

Jacquetta joined the History department in 2000 and was Head of History for 16 years. She has shared her love of history with more than 2,600 pupils – including Emma – and describes her years at the Senior School as ‘an absolute joy’.

Jacquetta explained: “I very quickly realised how blessed I was to be accepted into the Dame Allan’s family; it’s a very special place indeed. It stands out for me because of the special relationships that exist between staff and pupils. In many ways, it’s a unique workplace.”

Speaking about Emma’s return to Dame Allan’s, Jacquetta added:

“I was thrilled to hear that Emma had been appointed to replace me at Dame Allan’s. I remember her as a very bright and feisty student, who had a real passion for history. Emma brings many talents to her new role and her warmth, vibrancy and sense of humour will endear her to her new pupils and colleagues. I wish her the very best of luck and happiness in her career at Dame Allan’s”.
