Talented teenager Harriet Joll has been selected for the England U-16s hockey team, following years of dedicated training alongside her school work.
Harriet, aged 14, will join the prestigious national team as a Goalkeeper, and is fearlessly looking ahead to this momentous next step in her hockey career.
“I’m really happy!” she exclaimed. “It feels really good to have achieved this selection after I have worked so hard.”
Harriet relishes her position as Goalkeeper in the team, something which she says just ‘feels natural’ for her, adding:
“I was in Year 5 or 6 I think when I first played in goal, it can be a bit scary so no one wanted to do it, so I just went for it!”
Harriet is now anticipating her next training camp with the England U-16 team, which is taking place in Shropshire in early January. After that, matches will begin in earnest during the February half term of 2026.
Currently, she trains up to six times a week across the region, balancing this with her GCSE studies at Dame Allan’s.
“The school and my teachers have been so supportive.” Harriet said. “I would not be where I am without their encouragement and belief – not just sports teachers, but all of my teachers across my subjects.”
To add to Harriet’s busy schedule, she also plays cricket at county level, something that she plans to continue alongside her hockey and her studies.
Proud parents Heather and Matthew commented: “We are so proud of Harriet, who has trained tirelessly this year for her England trials. To have achieved her dream of playing for her country at just 14 is amazing. We can’t wait to support her on this journey.”
Looking ahead, Harriet has aspirations to gain a place at a university with a strong hockey programme to continue her passion, and is considering training as either a police officer, or a PE teacher.
Will Scott, Principal of Dame Allan’s Schools, commented on Harriet’s success: “Harriet has wowed us all with her spirit and determination, and her selection for the U16 England Hockey team is very well-deserved. We are very proud of her achievements.
