Dame Allan’s Sixth Form student Adam Davies is set to take his first steps into the aerospace industry after securing a competitive engineering apprenticeship with global leader Rolls-Royce.
The 18-year-old, from Washington, returned to school to collect his A Level results today in Maths, Geography and Design Technology, and will now take his next step into a career in precision engineering with Rolls-Royce’s aerospace division in his hometown.
Adam, who joined Dame Allan’s Schools in Year 7, developed his passion for engineering through practical work in the school’s Design Technology department, where he discovered an interest in working to fine tolerances and producing high-quality components.
“My DT teachers, Mr Sweeney and Mr Thompson, expect you to produce work to a very high standard,” said Adam. “Working with state-of-the-art tools in the school workshops made me interested in fine tolerances and high-quality work, which is where my passion for becoming a machinist started.
“Rolls-Royce is a growing, innovative company operating worldwide and they are true leaders in the field. I’m really looking forward to learning the trade hands-on and working alongside specialist engineers who are the best in their field.”
Adam credits the school’s Futures Fair careers lessons, guidance on personal statements and flexibility from staff for helping him navigate the multi-stage application process.
Beyond the classroom, Adam built up a strong practical background to support his application, participating in the Combined Cadet Force, the Engineering Society and the F24 kit-car racing competition, alongside completing his Duke of Edinburgh Bronze, Silver and Gold awards. He also documented his own DIY car maintenance projects to show employers his enthusiasm.
Offering advice to younger pupils considering a similar vocational route, Adam added: “Start looking early, build a portfolio with photos of projects you’ve worked on to show employers your genuine interest and do your research. The more prepared you are for interviews, the more confident you’ll feel.”
As part of the four-year Rolls-Royce Machinist Apprenticeship, Adam will undertake specialist training at Sunderland Engineering Training Association (SETA) in Washington alongside hands-on practical experience with the aerospace company. He will learn from experienced engineering specialists and gain practical skills using industry-standard equipment while earning a wage.
