Spanish

Studying Spanish at Dame Allan’s allows pupils to become capable, confident and curious linguists. In Key Stage 3, pupils study topics of relevance and interest to young people, with an emphasis on the core language skills of phonics, vocabulary and grammar. Lessons are rigorous, interactive and creative, combining language study with cultural learning opportunities relating to Spain and other Spanish-speaking countries.

Pupils can choose Spanish as an option in Year 8 and can choose it again in Year 9 alongside another modern language or Latin. Pupils have the opportunity to visit Barcelona in Year 9, Andalucía in Years 10-13 and take part in work experience abroad in the Sixth Form. They also have opportunities to explore language degrees and careers through trips to local universities and engage in local and national languages competitions.

At GCSE level, pupils cover a wide range of topics and gain a strong grounding in Spanish grammar whilst also developing their written and spoken communication skills. Studying A level Spanish allows students to reach an advanced level of proficiency in the language and provides students with an opportunity to explore Spanish film, literature and gain an insight into the historical and political context of countries across the Spanish-speaking world.
