French

Studying French at Dame Allan’s allows pupils to become capable, confident and curious linguists. In Years 7-9, pupils study topics of relevance and interest to young people, with an emphasis on the core language skills of phonics, vocabulary and grammar. Lessons are lively and interactive and provide pupils with creative and cultural learning opportunities relating to France and other French-speaking countries.

All pupils study French in Years 7 and 8, with the option to continue it into Year 9 alongside another modern language or Latin. Learning is enriched beyond the classroom through annual residential trips to France.

At GCSE level, pupils cover a wide range of topics and gain a strong grounding in French grammar whilst also developing their written and spoken communication skills. Studying A level French allows students to reach an advanced level of proficiency in the language and provides pupils with an opportunity to explore French film, music, culture and literature. Pupils also develop an understanding of current social and political issues and trends in French-speaking societies.
