Hockey

Hockey is the focus sport for girls in the Winter Term and an option for the boys in the Spring Term. Pre-season begins at the end of the summer holidays and most recently the 1XI travelled to Barcelona for their preparations. Pre season training and pre season trips help teams to bond and provides invaluable training and match practice before the season begins.

When hockey is the focus sport for girls, it is delivered in their games lessons. Additional training sessions occur either before school, lunch or after school in order to further prepare for competitions. Girls take part in fixtures during the week and also on a Saturday morning, leaving their afternoons free to participate in their local club games.

My favourite part about playing Hockey at Dame Allan's is that feeling when the team is all working together and it's going well - you just can't beat it! All of the teachers give you good advice and help you thrive as a player."

Charlotte, Year 10

We have challenging fixtures against a number of schools in the North East & Yorkshire. Dame Allan's enter various England hockey competitions and local county rounds each year. This year the U13s made their way to the semi-finals of the independent schools plate competition 2023 and the U15s made it to the Q finals 2023. The U16s won their local round and made it through to the Tier 3 North East Area Finals in Leeds.

The hockey facilities at Dame Allan's include an onsite astroturf pitch and indoor facilities in the sports hall. The Junior School regularly come up to the Senior School for training and also host fixtures at the senior site in addition to using the facilities at the Junior School. We also regularly use Newcastle University's new pitch at Longbenton for home fixtures and afternoon training. Alongside our excellent internal coaching staff we are grateful to be supported by a number of external specialist coaches including Newcastle University's Head hockey coach Craig Togher. We also have excellent links with local hockey clubs, such as Newcastle who play in the Yorkshire and NE Women's Premier Division.

We have many students, both girls and boys, who are chosen to represent the county and some who are in the talent pathway. Most importantly, many of our pupils continue to play hockey after they have left Dame Allan's.
