The Duke of Edinburgh Award encourages pupils to become healthy, independent, responsible citizens through the programme which recognises their development in a skill, a physical activity, and helping others by volunteering. The culmination of the award is an expedition.
The outdoor environment provides significant opportunities for the development of listening skills, leadership, team working and communicating effectively which are competencies that are essential for pupils’ future independence, employability and happiness. The outdoor environment is also beneficial to building maturity, sound mental health and social integration.
Pupils begin with the Bronze Award in Year 9, progressing to the Silver Award in Year 10, and completing the prestigious Gold Award in Sixth Form.
We are saddened to hear the news of the closure of Durham High School.
We understand that this will be a worrying and uncertain time for pupils, their families and staff. If your family has been affected, and you would like to discuss options for your child’s education, our Admissions Team is here to provide advice and support, and to answer any questions you may have.
