Aspiring medics celebrate an impressive slew of top grades

TOP performing girls at one of the region’s oldest independent schools are celebrating a slew of impressive results today before heading to university to become medics.

The remarkable group of pupils at Dame Allan’s Schools, in Newcastle, collectively achieved 13 A* and a further 10 A grades at A Level and spoke of their hopes to make a significant impact in the field of medicine.

Molly Hamilton, from Newcastle, achieved straight A* grades in A Level Biology, Chemistry and Maths, and will study Medicine at the University of Glasgow – following in the footsteps of her anaesthetist father, Dr David Hamilton, and her mother, Claire, a GP. She said: “I’m really happy… and very relieved! It’s been a stressful few weeks in the run up to results day after an unsettling few years with Covid. It affected everyone in the year but we’ve had lots of support in the school.

“These results mean a lot to me and I’m really happy to get into Glasgow because that is where my dad also went to university to study medicine!”

Megan Paes, from Gosforth, who achieved straight 9s at GCSE, continued her success at A Level with a straight set of A* grades in Biology, Chemistry and Maths and a grade A in Further Maths. Megan, whose father, NHS consultant and university lecturer Dr Paul Paes, is a governor at Dame Allan’s, is heading to the University of St Andrews to study Medicine.

She said: “I’m glad the waiting is over and I’m really pleased with my results. I’ve always been interested in the sciences and growing up around parents who are medics has made me really passionate about it. I’ve also had so much support from the school and the mock interviews they run definitely helped when I applied to study medicine.”

Sriya Sagi, from Newcastle, who led the school’s popular Medical Society MedSoc while in Year 12, received A* grades in Biology and Economics, an A in Chemistry and an A in an EPQ. She is going to Keele University to study Medicine.

Two students from Whickham, in Gateshead, also secured university places to study Medicine. Martina Rosher achieved straight As in Chemistry, Maths and Psychology and has accepted a place at the University of Leicester, while Melissa Young achieved A*s in Psychology and Biology and an A in Chemistry to secure a place at the University of Liverpool.

Anna Sudlow, from Gosforth, received As in Biology and Chemistry and an A* in History and will study Medicine at the University of Sheffield, while Meerab Khan achieved A*s in Biology and Spanish and an A in Chemistry and will head to the University of Exeter.

In addition to the students pictured, there we also celebrations for Meerab Khan, who is going to study Medicine at Exeter, and for Mahir Patwary, who will be studying Medicine locally at the University of Sunderland.

Will Scott, Principal at Dame Allan’s Schools, said: “It’s wonderful to see so many of our high achieving A Level students wanting to forge a career in medicine and accepting their first choice places at a wide range of fantastic universities.

“We support and nurture the hopes and dreams of all our pupils and wish them the very best on their journey.”
