Artistic stars shine on GCSE Results Day

Fifteen pupils at Dame Allan’s Schools in Newcastle achieved GCSE grades 8 and 9 in Art, with some of their artwork being completed at home while the nation was in lockdown.

Their success was today celebrated at the Newcastle-based school where work is underway to transform part of the site and create new art rooms and a central art exhibition space for showcase events.

Talented student Martina Rosher, from Wickham, who scored grades 8 and 9 in her GCSEs, said the facilities at Dame Allan’s helped her achieve a top grade in Art, despite the national lockdown.

“There are so many resources here already and the teaching is so enjoyable, it’s definitely reflected in the grades this year,” she said.

“The plans to improve the arts facilities and have a gallery I think are fantastic, because it will allow students to display their work and share it with others.”

Dame Allan’s Schools announced its £8m plan to create a modern arts centre, together with new classrooms, science labs and Sixth Form space on its grounds in Fenham, earlier this year.

Gateshead-based contractor Tolent began demolition work on site last month and works are expected to be fully completed next Summer.

Principal Will Scott, said: “Our art students have once again displayed an incredible amount of talent and artistic flair, and deservedly have been awarded fantastic grades that reflect their abilities.

“Art plays a huge role in the development of our pupils. It allows for self-expression and creativity, while helping students to explore their own ideas, build confidence, and portray emotion.”
