Development

Dame Allan's Schools were founded in 1705 when philanthropist and entrepreneur Dame Eleanor Allan's endowment provided an education for 20 girls and 40 boys, from the parishes of St Nicholas and St John in Newcastle upon Tyne, whose family circumstances would have limited them to little or no education.

The founding principle of this philanthropic support continues today in the modern day Dame Allan's foundation as independent co-educational schools with over 1000 pupils from Nursery to age 18.

The Development Office supports Dame Allan’s Schools through fundraising and by promoting the Schools’ achievements and aspirations as a centre of educational excellence, open to all. It actively seeks donations from Allanians and friends of the Schools in support of vital aspects of school life such as entrance and hardship bursaries and outreach activities with the local community.

We realise that there is always more we can try to do to improve the Schools. As such, we have identified three areas of need where we ask for your support. They are:

Access - creating opportunities for our students and wider community.

Merit - rewarding and recognising academic and social excellence and achievements.

Hardship - helping this generation of the Dame Allan’s family maintain their friendships, their sense of belonging and the opportunities that come from an exceptional education.

You can find more about our three funding themes and the impacts they have had on pupils, the wider community, the Schools and donors themselves on the Allanian Society website.

The continuing generosity of our alumni, friends and supporters is increasingly important and exciting opportunities for philanthropic giving are available to all. We are so thankful for all the support the Schools have been given so far, which has helped us to improve the experience for pupils at Dame Allan’s Schools and provide financial support to many families who would otherwise be unable to send their children to the Schools. We are proud to say that bursary assistance currently supports the places of over 10% of our pupils, with 40% of those pupils being awarded 'transformational' bursaries that cover over 90% of the fees.
