Many teenagers have spent the last few days worrying about their A Level examination results and whether or not they will be enough to get them into university. However, Callum Ward from Dame Allan’s Schools has chosen a completely different path.
Callum has recently been appointed as the organist at St James’ and St Basil’s Church in Fenham. This meant that, whilst his A Level results were brilliant, achieving an A and two Bs in history, religious studies and music, a bit of the pressure was lifted from him on results day, as he explains: ‘I was really anxious about my results of course, but having my job at the church has meant it was certain that I could pursue my music career, which is what I really want to do.’
What makes Callum’s appointment even more remarkable is that the 18 year old’s great-grandfather was the first ever organist and choir master at St James’ and St Basil’s. Appointed in 1931, Fred Ward spent 25 years at the church and for the position of organist to now be filled by his great-grandson is very special, both for the family and for the church. Callum said: ‘It feels surreal really, it means a lot to my family and it was very special the first time they saw me play at the church. I think my granddad found it emotional, watching me in the job that his father had: I hope I did him proud.’
The Canon Nick Darby, Vicar at St James’ and St Basil’s Church and the chaplain for Dame Allan’s Schools said: ‘This is an unusual role for a young person to have and we are thrilled to have offered it to Callum. He is a very talented musician, and he is eager to learn. Part of the church’s mission is to support and guide young people and the family history behind the job of course makes this very special for everyone.’
The position of organist will require Callum, who prefers to play from memory without music sheets, to play at Sunday services, weddings and funerals as well as other special services.
Dr Hind, Principal at Dame Allan’s Schools said: ‘We are thrilled with our students’ A Level results again this year and they are all going on to exciting things at university, travelling or work. Callum’s appointment is wonderful, we are delighted that he has secured a job that he enjoys and the link to his family, and to Dame Allan’s, makes it very special.’
The organ in St James’ and St Basil’s Church, a spectacular instrument which has 1900 pipes, was recently refurbished thanks to a generous donation of £200,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund.
Callum hopes to go on to university to study music next year.
Callum’s grandfather, Elliott Ward, was Chair of Governors at Dame Allan’s for ten years, stepping down in June 2016.
