A Level musician earns prestigious spot at Royal Conservatoire of Scotland

GIFTED North East singer Lettice Lamb has accepted a coveted place at one of the top performing arts schools in the world.

The 18-year-old mezzo-soprano from Newcastle will attend the esteemed Royal Conservatoire of Scotland (RCS) in Glasgow on a four-year scholarship, marking another significant achievement in her blossoming musical career.

Lettice, a music scholar at Dame Allan’s Schools, in Fenham, last year earned a place at the North East’s prestigious Samling Academy, where she trained under world-class vocal and performance experts. She has been accepted there again this year.

The teenager received multiple offers from top conservatoires, including the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, Royal Northern College of Music, Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance and the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, the latter of which also offered her a scholarship.

Lettice said: “I chose the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland because of its outstanding reputation. The conservatoire’s focus on singing in different languages each year, starting with Italian, also excites me.”

Lettice’s passion for music was evident from a young age, singing in church and school choirs. Her involvement in the Samling Academy, which saw her perform at The Glasshouse International Centre for Music, played a pivotal role in her decision to pursue a career in music.

Katherine Medway, interim Director of Music at Dame Allan’s Schools, praised Lettice’s achievements. “Lettice’s journey is a shining example of what can be achieved through a combination of natural talent, relentless dedication and a genuine passion for music,” she said. “Her selection for the Samling Academy and now her acceptance into the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland are testaments to her exceptional abilities.”

Looking ahead, Lettice remains open to the various paths her career might take. Her training at RCS, known for its rigorous curriculum and emphasis on linguistic and stylistic diversity, will provide her with the high-quality classical training needed to explore these genres further.

She said: “I am not sure where my career path will ultimately lead, but I know that with the training I’ll receive at RCS, I’ll be in the best position to develop my passion into a career. I’ve enjoyed being introduced to operatic music and can see it as a potential career path, but I also have a deep love for musical theatre and could see myself pursuing that as well.”

Throughout her time at Dame Allan’s Schools, Lettice has been heavily involved in choirs, ensembles and various musical, dance and theatrical productions, including a notable performance in ‘High School Musical’ earlier this year.

Principal Will Scott said: “Lettice has demonstrated remarkable dedication to her craft, whether it was in our school choirs, musical productions or her involvement with the Samling Academy. Her passion for music and her commitment to excellence have been evident in everything she does. We have no doubt that Lettice will continue to shine at RCS and beyond, and we look forward to seeing where her journey in music takes her.”
