Music

Music is an immersive and vibrant part of school life, offering pupils the chance to develop practical, compositional and analytical skills. All pupils in Years 7 and 8 explore a wide range of musical styles, from Northumbrian folk and classical repertoire to contemporary popular music, understanding not only technique but also music’s cultural, social and historical context.

From Year 9, Music becomes an optional subject, allowing pupils to specialise in areas such as Video Game and Film Music, composition and performance. GCSE and A Level Music provide a pathway for further study and careers in music, or for enhancing interdisciplinary skills across the curriculum.

Beyond the classroom, the school offers unparalleled co-curricular opportunities. Ensembles include symphony orchestra, jazz band, chamber choir, Cambiata, Diva Voce, Big Choir, string sinfonietta, percussion and guitar groups, and a ceilidh band. Pupils perform regularly in recitals, school productions and Open Mic Nights. Specialist peripatetic lessons cover orchestral, keyboard, guitar, percussion and vocal training, supported by music scholarships and links with Newcastle Cathedral for choral scholars.
