German

Studying German at Dame Allan’s allows pupils to become capable, confident and curious linguists. At Key Stage 3 the topics are of relevance and interest to young people, with an emphasis on the core language skills of phonics, vocabulary and grammar. Lessons are lively and interactive and provide students with creative and cultural learning opportunities relevant to Germany and other German-speaking countries.

German is taught as a Year 8 option with the opportunity to continue in Year 9 alongside another modern language or Latin. After one year’s solid grounding in the language, pupils have the chance to participate in our study trip to Cologne and Rhineland.

At IGCSE level, pupils cover a wide range of lively topics and deepen their understanding of German grammar, whilst also developing their written and spoken communication skills. Studying A level German allows pupils to reach an advanced level of linguistic proficiency and provides the opportunity to explore German film, music, festivals and literature.

Pupils also develop a keen appreciation of current social and political trends and issues in the German-speaking world. IGCSE and A Level students have the opportunity to participate in our language study trip to Berlin with tailored, full-immersion lessons and a range of activities associated with divided and reunited Berlin.
