Chemistry

Chemistry at Dame Allan’s Schools develops pupils’ understanding of the substances and reactions that shape the world around them, from everyday materials to the innovations driving medicine, technology and industry.

Taught in specialist laboratories, chemistry nurtures precision and analytical thinking, helping pupils develop logical reasoning, problem-solving skills and meticulous practical techniques.

In Years 7–9, pupils build a strong conceptual foundation while developing investigative skills through structured experimental work. Most pupils study Chemistry as a separate science at GCSE, with a Combined Science pathway available where appropriate.

At A Level, pupils deepen their understanding through physical, inorganic and organic chemistry, applying theory to practical work and tackling complex chemical problems.

Pupils are encouraged to extend their learning beyond the classroom through national competitions, including the Salters’ Festivals of Chemistry, the Royal Society of Chemistry Schools Quiz, the Cambridge Chemistry Challenge and the Chemistry Olympiad.
