Top grades sees Geordie headed to Cambridge

Head Boy and bursary student Geordie Cheetham is celebrating following confirmation that he’ll be able to accept his place at St John’s College, Cambridge - thanks to a clean sweep of three A* grades.

Geordie said: “Today is not how I imagined it would be, it’s definitely a bit strange, but it’s been a weird year. I'm thrilled with my results, though."

Talking of his application to Cambridge, he said: “Cambridge obviously has such a great reputation, it’s one of the best universities in the world. When it came to applying, I just thought if you can do it, why not?”

Geordie is also looking forward to the extracurricular opportunities available at Cambridge: “The great thing about Cambridge – and university in general – is all of the opportunities available for us to do different things outside of our studies. I’ve always loved sport and everyone has asked if I’ll get involved in the boat race. I don’t think I’d be any good, but I’d definitely give it a go!”

Willingness to ‘give it a go’ seems to be something of a life motto for Geordie, who attended Dame Allan’s Schools since joining in Year 7 on a full bursary.

“I’m really aware of the opportunities I’ve been given through attending Dame Allan’s. I don’t mean any disrespect to the state school I could have gone to, it’s a great school, but just they don’t have the same resources. I’d like to think I’m proof that it doesn’t matter where you come from, if opportunities are given, they will be repaid.”
