With our annual Carol Service, Founder's Day, Jazz Night and Junior School Talent Show already proven successful, it seems apt that the inaugural Senior Schools' House Music Competition should conclude our calendar of virtual music events before we return to in-school learning this month.
Music is a huge part of life at Dame Allan's and live performances have been hugely missed by pupils, parents, staff and supporters alike. Luckily, the music department at both the Junior and Senior Schools have been extremely proactive in utilising technology to ensure these events can be accessed from the comfort of our own homes.
About the competition
At the beginning of Spring Term, students were asked to submit a video of them solo performances from home. The performance could be unaccompanied or accompanied with a recorded track, but most importantly... they had to wear their house colours!
There were four categories within the competition, each judged by a professional musician:
- Year 7-9
- Year 10-11
- Year 12-13
- Popular Music (open to all year groups)
As ever, our students approached this opportunity with gusto and the music department received a total of 58 fantastic entries!
Let's meet the judges...

Tim is currently the Royal Northern Sinfonia Chorus Director, previously being Chorus Master at Opera North. He is also a familiar face at Dame Allan’s having judged last year’s inaugural House Shout competition.
He will be judging the Year 10 & 11 category.

She will be judging the Year 7-9 category.

Bradley has been leader of the Royal Northern Sinfonia since 1984, before retiring last year. He has also been leader of the Philharmonia and Orchestra of the Royal Opera House. He has recently been awarded an MBE for services to music.
He will be judging the Year 12 & 13 category.
Ren is a professional singer songwriter, originally signing with Island Records at the age of 17. Her debut album, Through The Night, reached number five in the UK charts. Ren has collaborated with Robbie Williams, Ed Harcourt and Romeo Stodard.
She will be judging the popular music category.
Thank you to our judges for taking the time to contribute and adjudicate to the House Music Competition and good luck to the students taking part in each category.
The winners from each category will be awarded points. The house with the most amount of participants will also have bonus points added to their total. The house with the most points wins Dame Allan’s House Music 2021.
Dame Allan’s Virtual House Music Competition will premiere on our YouTube channel on Friday 5th March, 7pm.
